How to Prevent Basement Water Damage?
For the first time, if your basement has got clogged with the water, then it is advisable to hire a water removal company. Some of the water damage restoration services rendered by them includes restoring flooring water damage, basement water damage, repairing water damage caused to roof leaks / sewers, water leak detection, etc. They will not remove and clean the basement but will determine the cause of basement water damage.
At times, the water in the gutter gets blocked due to debris or leaves. This may result in water back up and water entering your basement easily. It is the homeowner’s job to clean it. Depending on the area and number of trees the frequency of cleaning the gutter may me several times or may be twice or thrice in a year.
If the gutters are overflowing then it shows that there are not adequate number of down spouts on the house. Here a self-check during the rain is important. If the water is over flowing then there are more chances of water running down to the water foundations. May be if the water would be causing an unforeseen problem of soil erosion under the house footing. This may result in cracking of walls and ceilings. To overcome this problem, you might be required to add another downspout or hire a contractor for the job of increasing the size of the pipe.
Apart from this, basement can be flooded due to roof water that is built next to footing. If the footing title is leaking or blocked then again your house basement can be flooded. You might need to cap the vertical tile with a preformed cap or concrete.
Sometimes, the paved area around the next to house is sloped toward the house. As the result the water might accumulate and enter the basement. So problem needs to fix by building slope away from the house. At times paved area adjoining the house has sealant in the joint. If that joint gets cracked due to incorrect installation or age then it must be removed.
If you have plans to install lawn or a shrub irrigation system that discharges water, then it is advisable not to place it next to house. If this cannot be evaded then instruct the installer to have the system that has rain stat. This prevents the system from turning on when it rains heavily.
Hence to overcome the problem of basement water damage it is necessary to first know what the problem exactly. Then take the necessary steps to prevent water entering your basement.
