Most of the times the homeowner will make a decision on the brick paver pattern based on the appearance, and even though most pavers can be laid in a variety of patterns, you should really take your time on that decision in order to get the best out of your budget. The pattern you choose for your area should be able to go with your landscaping and give your home the impression you are searching for.

For instance, because the 45 degree is a busy looking pattern, it will bring the attention upon the paved area, giving also the impression that the area is smaller that it’s actual size. On the other hand, to give the feeling of a larger area, you should consider the 90 degree pattern.

The standard concrete brick, as the 4×8 brick is most known for, has three basic patterns for installation; they are the Stretcher, the Basket Wave, and the Herringbone. Each of these patterns can be varied in order to create different patterns with unique looks.

The Stretcher Band pattern: It is the simplest to install with a side-by-side appearance. It can look longer or broader depending on the direction it is installed. To give the appearance of a larger area, it should be installed in a length size direction. For an appearance of a larger area, the pavers should be installed in a length wise direction. For the impression, of a wide pathway, then lay the pavers in a wide direction across the area. The Stretcher Band pattern should be used in an area where vehicles will constantly brake or accelerate or make repeated turns.

Basket Wave Pattern: If you are searching for a more historical look, then this is a good option of pattern. The pavers are laid in squares, making it a very unique pattern. It is best suited for antique style pavers. Although this pattern has become less popular nowadays, this is still a great choice for a distinctive area.

Herringbone Pattern: There are two basic types of Herringbone patterns; the 45 degree and the 90 degree. The 45 degree is appropriated for an entertaining area; for it appears more noticeable and busy, as the 90 degree is more of a clean-look pattern. The Herringbone pattern is ideal for driveways or other areas used by vehicles because it well accommodates heavy loads such as cars and trucks. This pattern also reduces the chances for movement of the units as well as for the entire area

Concrete Brick pavers have a large collection of shapes and colors and can be laid in a variety of pattern to create a visually pleased environment. The shape will allow for some interesting and decorative design.
Among all the different shapes you will definitely find the look you want. Concrete Brick pavers begin from the simplest rectangular shape to the more complexes such as wedged shapes. Larger pavers are recommended for larger areas because it will look proportional. To form a unique setting, you can lay small pavers mixed with larger ones, as well as different colors combinations and different shapes.
Dented shapes are conductive to fully interlock being less likely to movement because they set together more uniformly. Pavers have been classified in three different categories: Fully interlocked on two axes, Interlocked on one axes, Non-dented or square and rectangular shapes.
For heavy traffic areas such as driveway and busy pedestrian paths the fully interlocked on two axes is recommended.
For light traffics areas such as walkways and footpaths rectangular and square shaped pavers are suggested, interlocked on one axes or non-dented shapes.

Rectangular shaped concrete brick pavers are considered to be the most practical and common of all the pavers that are available, because they are easy to manufacture, easy to package, easy to store and ship. They have been the preferred shape since the start of the paving concept.
There are other types of concrete brick pavers shapes that suit special installations, such as noise reduction, water permeability, grass growth and mechanized installation.
While the unique looking shapes will create a more visually appealing look, and some people do look for the unique looking area, others prefer the regular rectangular shape, for an easier maintenance in case of repair.

One of the most beautifying and creative additions you can make to your home or business is the addition of a patio surface, walkway, or creative stone and paver enhancement. These additions can add tremendous value and usability to your home or business. However, before you rush to the phone book and call just any paving contractor, there are things you probably need to consider.

Paver installation is a skill that requires education and specific knowledge. You really can’t call Bob from down the street and slap a few pavers in by yourself and expect it to last for years to come.

The base material is determined, for the most part, by the condition of the soil that is located under where the pavers are to be laid. Each state is unique, but basically pavers are laid on their base material which is determined by the type of material used under that particular state’s major roadways. Your paver contractor should be able to tell you offhand which material is used and how much is needed. Obviously, if a paver contractor can’t explain this thoroughly to you, it’s time to move on to a new paver contractor.

The foundation of the paver installation process must be precise. The soil density is vital to the paver installation process, and if you want the paver installation to last, it really is best to call in a qualified professional paver contractor. A weak or saturated area of soil may not reach the required density levels for proper paver installation, and then naturally the area would need to be modified in order for the pavers to lay properly. The basic goal, outside of beautiful and sound construction of the paver area, is to create the soil foundation a minimum of 95% Proctor density. Without great enough density the inevitable is bound to happen sooner or later, and the pavers may crack, split, or cave in under you without warning. A qualified paver contractor can explain exactly how this density requirement applies to your property, and what can be done to improve it prior to the paver installation.

Pavers can be installed in a variety of unique and interesting patterns to add flair and interesting qualities to your home, garden, or business. When laying pavers, long straight lines should be avoided, and either a basket weave pattern or a varying unique pattern should be used in straight line paver installation. This creates an ambiance that is reflective of your personality, as well as the home or business’ personality. A qualified paver contractor should be able to interest you in all kinds of unique paver designs and show you exactly how paver installation can dramatically beautify your home or business.

When looking for a paver contractor, make sure he or she is willing to listen to your ideas and thoughts, and then build upon them. A quality paver contractor will come will a solid reputation and references that are impeccable. Most of all, a paver contractor should be enthusiastic about your project. It is a project of creativity and artistic impression, combined with skill and knowledge. A lack of enthusiasm can be taken for a lack of artistic ability.

Swimming pools are your most pleasant and relaxing refuge during those ugly summer days. Just the thought of dipping into the inviting water is a sure temptation for anyone. Maybe that’s why more and more people are installing their own swimming pools at home. Getting your own swimming pool constructed requires you to go through some checks to make sure you have made the right decision. The first thing you need to do is decide whether you want a concrete swimming pool or a vinyl linear pool. On most counts choosing the former can turn out to be more beneficial for you because if you compare the pros and cons of both the kinds, there would be more advantages for concrete pools than vinyl pools.

First of all, the swimming pool you choose should go well with your landscape. Now this is a very important part of your swimming pool construction mission. A concrete swimming pool will emerge as the clear winner here, what with it offering you the opportunity to fiddle with various shapes and designs. Concrete pools let you step ahead of the standard shapes and sizes that are offered by pool constructors. This means that you can hire a good pool designer and let him run amok in a creative fit. With concrete pools you also have the advantage of creating lounging space by arranging for the construction of interior steps. Besides you can even go for an additional enhancer like a waterfall to be integrated with your pool, thus giving it a really classic look.

Now apart from the design and the accessories part, there are a few more things in your pool construction mission that needs attention. Deciding on the place where you want the pool to be constructed is very important. Try to make it closer to the house for easier access and to check on children, if there are any in the house. Considering that you are getting a concrete swimming pool built, it would be wiser if you choose a paving material that remains cool and offers you more comfort and style.

Water is everywhere. ¾ of the planet is covered in water, our bodies are made of 80% water, and we all need water in order to survive. With the gifts that water gives, there are some downfalls too. I’m referring to the structural damage, water can cause to our houses and buildings. What does water do? 1- runs downhill; 2- seeks its own level; 3- it eventually winds up in our basements. If there is a crack in a structure’s foundation, water will find its way in. You may not be aware of the water damage until it’s too late, but a good warning sign is efflorescence.

Efflorescence will present itself as a white powdery substance surrounding the edges of concrete, brick and other cement based surfaces. It is a result of the soil’s acid, reacting with the lime based cement. Water always finds a path; this path allows the soluble salts to migrate to the surface of the structure where moisture can evaporate. Once evaporated the salt residues crystallize creating the white powdery efflorescence. Over time, this white substance hardens on the surface and can be difficult to remove. If this powdery substance is present you know you have water damage. If left untreated, it will cause the eventual deterioration of the structure and cost a small fortune.

Do not fret, efflorescence is not hazardous. But it is unfortunately the warning sign of structural water damage. The actual white powder can be removed with media blasting such as soda blasting or with chemical products meant solely for this purpose. Once again, the white powder is a symptom of water damage, so washing away the residue may make the area look better for a short period of time, but the actual problem is continuing to deteriorate the structure. With sandblasting, the abrasiveness of the sand erodes the bricks surface along with the efflorescence, but will also cause more damage if you are not careful. Sandblasting increases the porous condition of the masonry and allows more water to be absorbed into the walls. Soda Blasting is more gentle. If you are thinking of getting your building professionally sandblasted, ensure the contractor seals the masonry with a waterproofing material afterwards.

Alternately, a chemical compound known as hypo-phobic sealer can help prevent efflorescence on bricks, tiles, concrete and paving. The sealer repels water and can penetrate deep into the masonry to keep water at bay and dissolve salts away from the surface. Unfortunately in areas where freezing occurs, this sealant can lead to damage from the seasonal cycles. Also, certain types of concrete are better at resisting efflorescence than others.

To ensure a proper repair and long life to your foundation or concrete floor or patio, discussing the problem with a professional concrete contractor or landscaper can save you thousands, its always cheaper to repair than rebuild.

This is not a job for a handyman, this requires a professional concrete contractor to arrest the ongoing damage and provide a long term fix to the crack in the masonry which is allowing the water in.

Efflorescence is a controllable problem that should not continue in well constructed modern masonry. A penny of prevention is worth a pound of cure, repairing cracks in the foundation will prevent efflorescence problems down the road. Breaking the chain of conditions leading to efflorescence can be done with the assistance of concrete professionals, the correct materials and of course quality construction. If efflorescence is visible on or around your commercial, industrial building or residential structure, call a professional immediately.

Below are details of concrete and mortar for different applications, how to estimate quantities and what these quantities mean. The various mixes are quoted as volume ratios, however the individual components are normally sold by weight, so a little calculation work is required.

For normal ‘around the house’ types jobs, Ordinary (or Portland) cement is required. This is normally available in 50kg bags, although smaller 25kg bags are increasingly becoming available to take account of the UK manual handling regulations. Try not to buy more cement than you need as it cannot be stored for very long. Some special cements are available (i.e. quick drying) which may be required for special situation.

Lime:

• hydraulic – which sets by combining with water.

• Non-hydraulic – this hardens by drying out.

• Semi-hydraulic – which is a half-and-half, it mainly needs to dry out but has some hydraulic properties.

Each type is available as either hydrated lime and quicklime – hydrated is more convenient to use as it has been processed ready for use. Hydrated hydraulic lime must be used straight from the bag. Hydrated semi- or non-hydraulic are better to use after soaking in water for 24 hours – stir it into water and leave it overnight – the lime sinks to the bottom and excess water can then be poured off. Mix the lime with the sand before adding the cement.

Lime is sometimes used in cement and reduces the amount of water drawn into the bricks, thus preventing the cement from drying out too quick and shrinking. The main types of lime are:

Sand:

Soft sand (or Builders sand): a smooth sand, non-gritty, loamy and with cohesive properties, can be used for:

• Bricklaying mortar

• For bedding paving slabs

• For rendering walls

Sharp sand: this has a gritty feel and is similar to that used to condition soils and potting composts, can be used for:

• Concrete

• For rendering floors and walls

Two types of sand are available but are not interchangeable in all applications, whichever type is being used, always pass it though a sieve before use to remove any small stones etc.

Aggregate

(also referred to as ballast): is used for concrete and consists of various sized particles from fine grains of sand to small stones. Aggregate is normally graded by size of the largest stones; 10mm Aggregate will have been sieved though a 10mm mesh to remove all larger stones.

Mixes:(see bottom of page for render/stucco mixes)

Mortar

sand : cement

sand : lime : cement

general building (above ground)

5:1

5:1:1

general building (below ground)

3:1

6:1:1

Internal walls

8:1

9:2:1

Cement in concrete and mortar creates its strength by chemical reaction, it is not like wallpaper glue which ‘drys out’, it ‘goes off’. In fact, if the concrete or mortar should ‘dry out’ before the chemical reaction is substantially complete, it will fail. Likewise if it is subjected to a frost, it can also fail.

Concrete/mortar will take months to reach it’s full strength however after about 24 hours it should be fairly hard and after 4 or 5 days, the strength should be enough to stand upto normal punishment.

The various components:

Cement:

Whenever construction related topics are discussed, the use of asphalt VS concrete always creates a bit of controversy. This is especially true when the discussion focuses on paving. Even the word paving these days is used to describe mostly asphalt. But the truth is pavement is any material used to created roads or driveways. The most common modern paving methods however are asphalt and concrete.

Both asphalt and concrete have a long history in the building industry because of the variety of ways the materials can be used. However, in regard to paving parking lots and driveways the biggest argument has mainly been about initial cost.

Now comes the inevitable question, “Which is the better material for parking lot and driveway surfaces?” The answer may surprise nearly everyone. And if you are a property or business owner, the results documented by industry experts as well as scientific studies are quite revealing.

According to Wikipedia, Discovery.com and Industry Sources, here are the latest findings. We’ll start with Concrete Paving.

The Complete details about Concrete Paving:

- Concrete is more prone to cracking and buckling because it’s rigid and dense design. Tree Roots, Ground Movements, Freeze Thaw Cycles and soil movement are huge contributors to concretes deterioration.
- According to the Ohio Highway Commission, concrete costs of $70 to $100 per cubic yard were more than double the costs of asphalt paving. All Ohio highway paving is now done with asphalt.
- Concrete paving of parking lot and driveway surfaces requires more time and initial cost than asphalt paving. This hold especially true the larger a project gets.
- Repairs to concrete paving surfaces are more costly to repair than asphalt. They also don’t blend as well as paving does. Especially after asphalt gets freshly seal coated.
+ Concrete paving last far longer than asphalt paving surfaces.
+ Concrete paving maintenance cost over time, is far less expensive than asphalt paving.
+ Concrete paving requires far less on-going maintenance to keep its strength.

The complete details about Asphalt Paving:

- Asphalt requires continual maintenance including seal coating, striping, crack filling, and many other forgotten costs when deciding what type of pavement to install.
+ Asphalt Paving offers more flexibility giving a light advantage over concrete in terms of handling stress and cracking.
- + Asphalt is the easiest to use and most economical pothole repair product available. It can be applied as a cold patch, hot patch, and become a permanent solution for repairing potholes in a shorter amount of time than concrete and other more costly hybrid mixtures. Keep in mind that potholes are far less likely in concrete.
+ In addition to pothole repair, asphalt is used to repair parking lots, driveways, and roadways on a larger scale. The preparation for paving with asphalt is relatively easy, depending on the condition of the surface being covered. Asphalt paving can be done directly over the present pavement in many cases.
+ Asphalt is very strong, durable and weather resistant in addition to being resistant to damaging effects from chemicals
- Only when the maintenance schedules are kept up.
+ Asphalt sets faster than concrete giving it a strong advantage in both cost and convenience for parking lot and driveway paving.

In summary,

Asphalt : An environmentally friendly and recyclable paving product that provides many benefits for driveway, road, and parking lot paving applications. With its upfront cost savings, it is by far the more popular choice for parking lot and driveway paving construction. However, those upfront savings are quickly lost with in the first 5 years of installation through ongoing and costly parking lot construction projects.

Concrete: Also highly green in its recyclable qualities. Concrete paving is a long lasting, low maintenance cost product which looks great over time. Although typically more difficult and slightly costlier to repair, when that time comes. Over time the cost to maintain a concrete pavement surface is much lower. Over the life span of 20–30 years there will be even a larger saving on concrete constructed projects VS its asphalt counterpart.

So now its time for you to decide what pavement medium fits your needs!
