Ordering Guide

Installation Guidelines

Limestone Installation Guide

Installing limestone outdoors can add a beautiful and natural touch to your outdoor space. However, it is important to properly install and care for limestone to ensure its longevity and maintain its appearance.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install limestone outdoors:

1) Planning: Before starting the installation process, it is important to plan out the project. Measure the area where you want to install the limestone and determine the amount of limestone you will need. Consider factors such as the slope of the ground, drainage, and any existing structures or obstacles that may affect the installation.

2) Prepare the area: Clear the area of any vegetation, rocks, or debris. If necessary, remove any existing concrete or other flooring materials. Make sure the ground is level and properly compacted.

3) Lay the base: Install a base layer of crushed stone or gravel to provide stability and drainage. Spread a layer of 2-3 inches of crushed stone or gravel and compact it using a plate compactor or hand tamper. Ensure that the base is level and smooth.

4) After the subbase is compacted, use a wet bed of mortar 6:1 ratio and ensure you achieve 35 to 50mm laying course of mortar mix. All natural stone should be laid on a full-contact bed of mortar that supports the whole flagstone. Use of a priming slurry should be applied to the underside of the paving stones to help improve adhesion (spot bedding on any paving stone is not recommended). Ensure all cement stains are washed off immediately or this would result in staining the slabs.

5) Paving stones should be carefully laid on top of the mortar mix, tap into place using rubber mallet. Place the next flag with an adequate joint and continue with appropriate laying guide. After completion of laying the flagstones, curing time should be allowed for 24 hours.

6) Cut and shape the limestone: Use a wet saw or angle grinder with a diamond blade to cut the limestone to fit around edges, corners, or any other obstacles. Wear protective goggles and a dust mask when cutting the limestone.

7) Fill the gaps: After all the limestone pieces have been laid, fill the gaps between the stones with grout or fine sand. Sweep the grout or sand into the gaps, making sure they are completely filled. Use a broom or brush to remove any excess grout or sand from the surface of the limestone.

8) Seal the limestone: Depending on the type of limestone and the desired finish, you may choose to seal the limestone to protect it from stains and weathering. We recommend using our professional grade 2 in 1 EASYSeal Stone Sealer & Enhancer.

We recommend regularly cleaning the limestone using a mild detergent and water to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using acidic or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the limestone. Reapply sealant as needed to maintain its desired look and protective layer.

Following these steps will help ensure a successful outdoor limestone installation, remember to consult the manufacturer's instructions, and seek professional help if needed.

It goes without saying that if you would like any further advice before embarking on your
external tiling job, we are always here to support and guide you.
